A foraging fish, usually found in large schools, particularly in shallow, coastal waters, which is a commercially important food fish, particularly in northern areas of Europe. The flesh has a high oil content, and is preserved in various ways. Silvery in colour, with a single dorsal fin, no lateral line and a protruding lower jaw. They feed predominantly on small marine food, and are not a sport fish, being caught primarily as a by-catch when angling. They rarely exceed 40 cms or 500 grams in weight.
